Reggae-ROCK Music

The explosion of so-called Reggae-Rock music, a blend of Reggae melodies and Rock-and-roll style has taken on California ever since a band from Long Beach called Sublime became popular in the 1990s with their punk-rock, ska, reggae, hip-hop style! This is no surprise because at the same time the surf-and-skate scene was building near the coasts of California, so was the Westcoast hip-hop scene! Rappers like Snoop Dogg, Tupac, and Ice Cube had received wide support with their Rap Music while other parts of the U.S. nation were experimenting with Alternative Rock and underground music. Out came Sublime, and as quick as the band's frontman Bradley Nowell overdosed and passed away, a fusion of Reggae Music and Rock had emerged among the growing youth of a new genre! As California bands such as Blink 182, Papa Roach, and No Doubt took off in the Rock genre, other bands such as Slightly Stoopid, Pepper, and the Dirty Heads produced more Reggae-Rock music that would inspire a new generation of music!

The most-commonly known Reggae artist is Bob Marley! Indeed, with his blend of ska, guitar and keyboard riffs, and righteous vocals, Bob Marley's music had indeed set the precedence for Reggae music from Jamaica. He and other well-known, classic Reggae artists, such as Peter Tosh and Gregory Isaacs, set up a generation of music lovers whom not only appreciate culture, but the unifying message often found within the music- to be in harmony through music and suffering, for the glory is in JAH, or "God" and His Revelations! Not only that, but Reggae has a classic "one drop" drumbeat that not only sets the mood of such music, but works as the background for all Reggae music. With skanking guitar and keyboard riffs, Reggae music produces a sound like no other in that it is recognizable by its most loyal fans! Whereas Reggae-Rock music blends in Classic Rock styles with such classic Reggae riffs, the genre is still only gaining momentum as people come across various interpretations of Reggae-Rock music!

In an interview with Reggae Legend, Ashton "Family Man" Barrett of The Wailers, he once told this writer that California is the leader in music through its history and ability to produce music! With Hollywood located in this golden state, it is no wonder why California is known for producing some of the most successful music worldwide with such record companies as Atlantic, Interscope, and of course, Geffen Records! Especially nowadays with California's mild climate and coastal communities, the environment is ripe for developing music talent and live-music shows- not to mention other business involved in the Entertainment Industry, and so often found in the Los Angeles and surrounding areas!

As far as Reggae-Rock bands are concerned, perhaps it is California's laid-back attitude and support for variety that fuels this current fusion of music! Besides the numerous amount of synergy and preference taking the scene by storm, it really is about the legacy left by two great artists who hold a special place in people's heart- and those two people are Bob Marley and Bradley Nowell. Both musicians have paved a way for younger, aspiring musicians to not only play both Reggae and Rock music, and blend it together, but they have built a culture which seeks to create and listen-to great music, and support it independently through grassroots movement- that is, market it with little use of Big Business, keep it personal and free, and spread it through actual human effort, which includes by word-of-mouth, independent labels, and of course, the use of technology- which is also usually bought and paid for by musicians themselves! Even though it is a rendition of various music styles, Reggae-Rock music is progressive and allows for the creation of not only Unity, but Independently-owned and operated music!

Thus, in an effort to not only promote this kind of music and business, I have created my website to be more friendly to both Reggae and Rock genres- that is, taking both the business aspect of the entertainment and technological world, and utilizing the independence so often desired in Creation and Freedom of Expression!

Cheers to ALL the Music in the World!
